It was the big central taproot which baffled them. They had hewed easily through the great side roots, large as branches, covered with soft brown bark; they had dug down and cut through the forest of tender small roots below; but when they had passed the main body of the stump and worked under it, they found that their hole around the trunk was not large enough in diameter to enable them to reach to the taproot and cut through it. They could only reach it feebly with the hatchet, fraying it, but there was no chance for a free swing to sever the tough wood. Instead of widening the hole at once, they kept laboring at the root, working the stump back and forth, as though they hoped to crystallize that stubborn taproot and snap it like a wire. Still it held and defied them. They laid hold of it together and tugged with a grunt; something tore beneath that effort, but the stump held, and upward progress ceased. They stopped, too tired for profanity, and gazed down the mountainside after the manner of baffled men, who look far off from the thing that troubles them. They could tell by the trees that it was a high altitude. There were no cottonwoods, though the cottonwoods will follow a stream for more than a mile above sea level. Far below them a pale mist obscured the beautiful silver spruce which had reached their upward limit. Around the cabin marched a scattering of the balsam fir. They were nine thousand feet above the sea, at least. Still higher up the sallow forest of lodgepole pines began; and above these, beyond the timberline, rose the bald summit itself.

Max Brand writes great classic westerns and this is one of them. It's a tale of a big, strong but gentle man, Bull Hunter who means no harm. Bull learns life's lessons well as he travels away from his abusive relatives to enter the real world. Along the way he befriends a renowned gun fighter who takes him under his wing and trains him in the ways of a fast gun. Never losing his gentle manner and ways, Bull can't help but make new friends along his journey. But there are foes who want to end Bull's life. They find Bull a tough man to beat. The story glides along well with good characters and a sound connection between man and elements. This is one of the most enjoyable Max Brand tales I've read so far. Recommended, of course.Product details

Bull Hunter Max Brand 9781490591629 Books Reviews
Interesting story about how redemption. Always liked Max Brand so it's no surprise that I liked this one. Not high literature but then again that's not what you are looking for in a western. Plus the price makes this a no brainer.
A simple down to earth character that captures your attention from the very start. A humble character with such an appeal that you wish you possessed some of his humility and strength of character. I am looking forward to the next book!
A delightful book. Started great and ended even better. Max Brand is / was a great writer. If you enjoy a good western you'll enjoy this book!
Bull Hunter is a "slow witted" fellow according to his family. He tries to please and do the right thing and after he sets off on his own he becomes his own man with "more smarts" than any of the family.
Good little story with heart, brains and brawn!
I enjoyed this story although Westerns are not usually in my book bag.
This book follows the development of Bull Hunter from a despised, humiliated taken-in nephew to a confident man. The book holds your interest and you feel a part of Bull's life story.
Anyone that likes a good no nonsense western by an author that explored and knew what the west once was, will love his books.
If one likes the westerns genre, I highly recommend this book. The writing is excellent, the pace perfect, scenery depiction delightful, and character development exceptional in this story. It's a splendid story of life with its vulnerability, hardships, and the development of a man's strength of character. The actions scenes are gripping. There are unexpected twists in ever evolving scenes that intensify the protagonist depth and inspire the reader to be the best person he/she can be.
Again, I highly recommend this book.
