Trickster centers around Lem - one of the world's blood mages. . In this world there are two types of mages - those who use bleeders and those who supply their own blood for their magics. Lem is one of the latter a Trickster level mage soley by choice.

The title comes from how the low-ranking, barely enough skill for small magics, mages refer to themselves. They are a community of con artists, thieves and grifters. They survive using little spells like making a crumpled up one dollar bill appear as a twenty. Running small cons for small gains. They run their Magic on Gas ( freshly spilled blood) most like Lem use their own whether because like Lem they have a code or they just dont have the skill to work more dangerous and volitle spells that require the blood of others or even death. They're scraping by and for the most part ignore (and are ignored themselves) by the more powerful magic users of the world whose greater skills or matched for their disregard for human life. At least that's how it was for Lem before he found Claire Mannice tied up in the trunk of a car. Now Lem's in the thick of it and fighting just to keep himself and his friends alive.

Where the book is so interesting where it excels is in the morality, or lack of it, of Blood Magic. Lem has skills but is severly hampered by his own ethics the reasons for why this grifter and conman draws the line at bleeders and his struggles at keeping his code are some of the best parts of the story. In essence, as Lem says throughout the story Blood Mages are not nice people, and this story is driven by the struggles and differences between those small time con men, ,selfish , venal and of dubious morals and the Arch Mages, Blood Mages of staggering Power and almost complete Sociopaths. This book isnt so much about the struggle of good and Evil as it is, the struggle between not as Bad and Evil.

Dark but humourous, cool world building and a nice dash of romance , Trickster is worth checking out, it wont be to everyones taste, but for those willing to try they will find one of the best Urban Fantasys of recent years.

Trickster The Ustari Cycle Jeff Somers 9781451696776 Books Reviews

I loved this author's last series, following Avery Cates, and now he starts off a new one with a bang! So Good! definitely check it out!
Great story! I enjoyed it from the very first page. I was actually not expecting to develop such a fondness for this band of characters but Somers did such a nice job of slowly letting you see what's inside, I'm really looking forward to the next installment to see where they go next. Definitely recommend!!
This is another solid read by Jeff Somers. Although it's not as good as his Avery Cates series, this is still worth reading. It has some very interesting twists and turns.
As Urban Fantasy goes, this is as good as it gets. My recommendation is...just read everything by Mr Somers. sheer unadulterated entertainment of the best kind, that is sadly lacking in so many novels of the last 10 years.
Trickster is a really interesting story involving magic and some definitely interesting characters. The main characters were fun to read about along with some of the minor characters. The story was entertaining throughout and never had me bored. Trickster is a great start to a new book series by Jeff Somers and really sets up for bigger things to come in the next book. I look forward to reading more books set in this universe.
What i liked
The central magical conceit in the book - magic is powered by the flow of blood - is a great one, and is fantastically well thought through in its use in the book.

The plot kicks along at a cracking pace, the two major characters are well fleshed out human beings, and - unlike many urban fantasy novels - even the villains seem to have some vaguely believable reasons for their behaviour.

Most of all, Jeff Somers is one of those rare authors that can create the slang of an imaginary subculture and not have it sound forced or clunky.

What I didn't the book was a bit short on strong and well rounded female characters.

Great addition to the genre, though.
What can I say. I am a big fan of the Avery Cates books. BUT... Urban Fantasy (yuck) is NOT at all my thing. No sir. I decided to give ol' Jeff a try. My first thought was- the cover has been magiked to make me want to put the book down. However, I paid the additional .49 to get a real paper copy so I figured I was stuck with it.

I started in. Ok, so I didn't have to wade through a pile of silly names and categories of faieries and werewolve/yeti/vampire/CHUD half breeds fighting over the 'mystical chalice of monsorow kurat-sabino' or something like that. But all too soon they get into drinking, so now I know it is indeed a Somers book! Write what you know they say, and he does.

As I said, I don't care for urban fantasy, so I was slow to get it this. Unlike Electric Church where by page 2 it was "where have you been all my life." Took about 3 chapters until I found myself realizing I was enjoying it. One of the things I like about it is that it's more about the characters than about spinning some deep magical mystical world which gets so complicated you can't keep it all straight without an additional book to explain it all. His world is simple although I do wonder how female magicians deal with their periods.

So what can I say to wrap this all up 1. Jeff can write. 2. I found I enjoyed it even though I don't normally like the genre. 3. BY the end I was not sad he left techno stiff behind. 4. I look forward to the next book. 5. I still say Bruce Willis should play SOMEONE in the movie.
